I can explain it-- I understand it (although I don't completely agree with it)...

It's not about alternative energy, it's about government subsidies. Solyndra had received a huge federal grant to improve their products/further their research/etc. And they failed.

Conservative media doesn't mind new technologies, they just prefer the government stay out of it. Let the free market pick the winners and losers, not the government. That's the rationale.

Yes there is a desire to drill, but drill locally... or at least on our own continent (or off the shores of our continent) as a short term fix to reduce our dependence on foreign oil with cheaper domestic oil to buy us time to better perfect the technologies behind alternative energies.

Right now, alternative energies aren't as cost-effective as the tried and true ones we've been using. Many Americans can't afford the higher price of hybrids or the higher cost of organic food for that matter. In many regards being "green" in this country is almost a luxury as it costs more in the short term. Because of this "being green" is viewed as being a bit elitist. With the economy in the shape its in people are acting with their wallets and bank accounts and with "green" in many cases still being so much more expensive, its not cost effective for most struggling families.

So all of these new technologies to reduce our dependence on foreign oil are seen more as a luxury at best and as an inopportune financial burden at worst and less as an environmental and foreign policy blessing.

How can we outlaw stupidity? There would be too few Illinois voters to hold and election. :)

I don't think the manager was clueless. It seemed like a good answer even though it may have been in jest. The healthy, good drivers, those who have good paying jobs and loyal customers, and those who play by good rules have their own reward and should be happier.
